At the outset of the American Civil War, the US Navy was a small but modern force. Boasting 90 ships in total and with 24 of those ships having modern steam power, the Navy's primary goal pre-war was coastal defense. For this, it was equipped with gunboats, frigates, and sloops-of-war. From the moment the guns fired on Sumter, it was clear that the Navy would play an important role in the conflict. The Anaconda Plan, the blockade of the South's ports, would be the primary goal  of the Navy for most of the war, the rebels having little in the way of a navy of their own.
