The Royal Lao Armed Forces, commonly known by their French acronym FAR, served as the armed forces of the Kingdom of Laos from the establishment of the independent Lao state in 1953 until the abolition of the monarchy in 1975. Organized from earlier Lao military formations developed during the French colonial period, the FAR was responsible for defending the Kingdom’s sovereignty, maintaining territorial security, and supporting the government during a period of profound political and military instability.

The FAR consisted of the Royal Lao Army, Royal Lao Air Force, and Royal Lao Navy, alongside specialized and paramilitary formations that operated throughout the country. During the Laotian Civil War, the armed forces fought alongside allied and irregular formations against the Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese forces.
