The Duchy of Luxembourg was elevated to a Kingdom in the Peace of Westphalia, following a turbulent role in the Thirty Years’ War. Initially aligned with France, Luxembourg joined the conflict in 1635, winning small victories before a major defeat at Eindhoven. A separate peace with Austria was arranged through another dynastic marriage, but renewed French violations of Luxembourgish territory pushed the duchy back into the war on the side of the Austrians and Catholic League. The 1648 treaty ultimately confirmed Luxembourg’s rise to royal status with the support of Emperor Ferdinand III and Pope Innocent X. Year: 1752 Monarch: Marie II
