The Ottoman Empire, often viewed as a major world power, emerged in Anatolia from the Turcoman groups once tied to the Seljuk realm—peoples whose distant steppe heritage is often linked to ancient confederations like the Xiongnu. For centuries it dominated much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. From the 13th to early 20th century, it extended its rule deep into southeastern and Central Europe, shaping regional cultures and influencing trade and politics across vast lands.
