In 1880, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta existed as a sovereign chivalric institution without territorial dominion. 
Having lost the island of Malta to France during the 1798 invasion, the Order no longer governed land, yet it maintained its sovereign character in diplomacy and tradition. 
Its headquarters operated from Rome, where it enjoyed certain privileges and continued its mission of charitable medical and military service. Though deprived of physical territory, the Order preserved its identity as a historic sovereign body, sustained by its international recognition and enduring humanitarian role.
