Sludge metal is an extreme style of music that combines doom metal with hardcore punk. It's typically loud, nasty and abrasive. This includes highly distorted and downtuned guitars, shifting tempos, and a raw, underproduced sound with misanthropic lyrics. Guitar feedback and harsh (almost tortured) vocals are very common as well.
