The flag of Saskatchewan is divided edge to edge: a green upper half for the northern forests and a gold lower half for the southern grain fields that feed much of the nation. In the upper hoist sits the provincial shield of arms — a red lion above three golden wheat sheaves — while the fly carries the western red lily, the province's floral emblem, in bloom. The design was chosen from more than two hundred entries in a public competition, the winning hand belonging to Anthony Drake, and it was adopted in nineteen sixty-nine. The province now marks the twenty-second of September each year as Saskatchewan Flag Day, honoring a banner that pairs the land's two great realms, woodland and wheat. 1:2 Proportion
