US NAVY VAW-124 Bear Aces Squadron Shoulder Patch

"Bear Aces." The squadron patch of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 124, the Bear Aces of the United States Navy. Commissioned on September 1, 1967, and originally nicknamed the Bullseye Hummers, the squadron was redesignated the Bear Aces in 1980 after numerous directed intercepts of Soviet reconnaissance aircraft during deployment to Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland. The squadron flies the Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and command-and-control aircraft and is attached to Carrier Air Wing 8. Based at Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia. The squadron insignia features a bear with aces, and the two stars represent the F-14 intercepts under Hawkeye control during the Gulf of Sidra incident in 1981.
